All counselors have
experience with this population and the retreat director is a licensed individual and
family therapist.

This is not a
therapeutic program. However, all staff has experience with this population.

What if my child breaks the
rules?
Every child will
sign a contract at the beginning of the program and accept responsibility for obeying
the rules. With the exception of drugs, alcohol, and weapons possession, the
child will be warned after the first infraction and dismissed from the program after
the second violation.
What if my child is caught with drugs, alcohol, or
weapons?
Any child caught
with drugs, alcohol, or weapons will be asked to leave and parents and/or guardians
will be required to pick the child up or maketransportation arrangements for their
immediate removal.

Results
What
will my child gain?
The program will demystify and normalize the social, emotional, and self-esteem
aspects of ADD.
Survival in the wilderness will be used as a metaphor to teach leadership skills
and provide successful experiences that will build confidence.
Teens will learn how to advocate for themselves in school, understand the
difference between shame , blame, and guilt, and time management
Both teens and parents will leave with some skills and resources to support the
development of healthy relationships.
Is this a therapeutic environment?
No. This is leadership-training program customized for ADD/ADHD children but
it is not therapeutic.

program?

Medical
Can my Child take their ADD drugs
during the program?
We urge participants to give up ADD meds voluntarily during this retreat.
My child is on
other medication; how will they take this during the program?
If parents or
guardians have identified other medications in the application, the nurse on site
will dispense them.
Is there a nurse on site?
Yes.
Is there a doctor on site?
No, but there will
be Wilderness First Responder trained in EMS and CPR-certified personnel.
Additionally, a licensed psychiatrist will be on call.
What happens in case of a medical or
psychiatric emergency?
A registered nurse will be on site and licensed psychiatrist is on call
24/7.
Is there a hospital nearby ?
Yes. Every Campsite will be within 15-20 minutes of a
hospital.
Do you have an
emergency evacuation plan?
Yes.
What if my child gets sick during
the program?
If your
child’s health needs cannot be treated by the on site nurse of Wilderness First
Responder, they will be transported to the closest hospital.

Program
The program
is brand new. What kind of experience will by child have?
This program combines leadership training with outdoor education and wilderness
survival. Your child will learn not only to survive in the wilderness but also to
function in everyday life.
Your child will have a fun, challenging retreat experience along with the benefit
of experts in leadership training and teen psychology.
They will also leave strategies not only for self-management and advocacy but also
with skills and resources for healthy family dynamic
Do
parents have to participate?
Yes. ADD Student Leadership is about nurturing a healthy community and family is the
primary community. Therefore parental involvement is essential. Parents
will be involved both in the beginning and end of the program.
Parents stay for the fist afternoon and evening with an overnight optional.
They return for the last day of the 4-day program
Can other family members participate?
Only parents, guardians, and stepparents may participate.
Is the program
dangerous?
No, The program is designed to build confidence and make your child fee successful.
Every child is closely monitored during the wilderness component of the program.
It is a coed program. What
will be done to keep my daughter safe?
A ratio of 2 counselors to every 5 teens will be maintained throughout the program
and the children will be supervised at all times
Will the children be out in the
elements if it is dangerous weather?
No. Every campsite will have adequate indoor shelter in
case of inclement weather.
Will my child be taught about sex and drugs?
Yes, Experts will
address the role of sexuality and drugs, both legal and illegal, and their impact on
the individual and family system. If you have any discomfort with your child
participating in discussion of sexuality and drugs, please do not consider the
program. It is an integral part of the program.
Will the boys and girls be separated for showers,
sleeping, and dressing?
Yes, For most of
the program, teens will participate as a single group of 20-25 but they will be
separated by gender for discussion on sex and drugs, as well as for sleeping,
showers, and dressing.
What is the ratio of counselors to kids?
A ratio of 2 adults to 5 teens will be maintained throughout the program.
Will my child have to miss
school?
Yes.The workshops
take place over four day weekends in the fall, which means participants miss two days
of school. We think the workshops will be most effective during the stresses of the
school year, not away from it.
What does my child need to
bring with him?
Equipment List:
- A warm sleeping bag (it can get chilly at night)
- Cool and warm weather clothing, more wool/synthetic than cotton.
- Rain Gear, hat, two pairs of shoes, one can be sandals
- Eating Utensils: Bowl, cup and spoon, fork
- Toiletry items (biodegradable soap only please)
Keep use of cell phones only during meal times.
No game-boys or portable music
